  • Let’s Play War!

How come we play war and not peace?

  • Beautiful Things

God’s love has overtaken me. Some of you reading this know exactly what I’m talking about. Some of you, unfortunately, don’t. Some wonder how I can believe in an all-loving God. I believe in an all-loving God because I’ve experienced this love firsthand. Even when I wasn’t living my life for God, even when I was mocking God, even in the times I denied Him, even in my very worst moments, even before I knew Him, He’s loved me.

The awesome thing is, God loves you too; and He is patient with you. Even when you aren’t living for Him. Even when you mock Him. Even when you deny Him. Even in your very worst moments. Even if you don’t know Him, He loves you. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you’ve done. You can’t move without it. You are captured in this love, and there is no escape.

In church terms, we call this love “prevenient grace”. It is because of this love that we are even able to notice God in the first place.

There are some who believe that Christian’s follow too many rules. Some would even say that a lot of Christians even try to force others, even the nonbelievers into following these “rules”. In truth, that isn’t what Christianity is all about. Jesus gave us two rules to follow: Love God, Love our neighbor. By following these two rules, we open our hearts to God and God directs our way of living.

In scripture, we see a lot of do’s and dont’s. These aren’t “rules” per se. These are merely examples of how you can tell that you are living for God. In other words, Christians surrender their sin, their selfishness, their very lives over to God. In turn, God renews us. We become transformed into a new creation. This is what we call being “born again”. And in this transformation, we become something that wants to be more like Christ- more like how we were intended to be to begin with. These aren’t rules we follow. These are fruits. It’s how we know we are following God- when we no longer want to do those things which separate us from God. We call this “sanctification”.

This is why I don’t try to enforce anything I believe. A person has to be willing to allow God to change their walk, their talk, their life, otherwise, nothing is gained. Only God gives us the power to be like Him. It can’t be pushed on someone. This way of life has to be experienced. God opens us to these new things. Then we can accept it. And only then, are we actually able to live it out. This has to be a choice.

I’ve seen God do beautiful things with my life. I’ve seen him do even more beautiful things in the lives of others. I’ve seen God pick up dust from the ground and form it into a beautiful thing in His image. I’ve seen this. And if God can do this to me, God can do this to anybody.

Please don’t leave without listening to this song first.

    “Beautiful Things”- Gungor

    All this pain
I wonder if I’ll ever find my way
I wonder if my life could really change at all.

    All this earth
Could all that is lost ever be found
Could a garden come up from this ground at all?

    You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
    You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us.

    All around
Hope is springing up from this old ground
Out of chaos, life is being found in You.

    You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
    You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us.

    You make me new
    You are making me new

    You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out the dust
    You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us.

God specializes in creating. He creates and he can create out of His creation. He also restores, rejuvenates, and makes us new. This is how much God loves us. He cares about His creation enough to renew it when it heads toward chaos and destruction. This is how much God loves us. He makes beautiful things out of us- this dust.

If you’re curious, my cousins are 2 of the “fab 3″.

  • Immaturity

Sometimes for our own sanity, we need to let loose and be a little immature every once in awhile. :)

    Have an awesome day!

  • What is Love?

Yesterday, I posted a blog regarding Christian Peacemaking (I’m steering away from the word ‘pacifism’ because the implication it gives is generally a false one). In any case, the topic quickly went from talking about a Christian’s involvement in war to talking about the love of God.

This makes sense because how one would view Christian peacemaking is a reflection on how one would view God’s love. I am convinced that God’s love is unconditional. There are others, Christians and atheists alike, that believe that God’s love does have certain and specific conditions.

Is God’s love unconditional? If not, what are the conditions?

What are Jesus’ teachings on love for your neighbor, love for your enemies, and love for God as you understand it?

  • Here’s a Question For You

At work today, I saw a truck with a bumper sticker that said, “When Jesus said to love your enemies, I think he probably meant that you shouldn’t kill them.” As a Christian peacemaker, I loved it! I’ve made my stance on the Christian involvement in war pretty clear on numerous occasions. But I want to know your opinion. Can you reconcile Jesus’ teachings on anti-violence, peacemaking, and unconditional love with Christian involvement in war? Are the ideas at odds with each other? What does it mean to you to love your neighbors? Your enemies?

  • God, Suffering, and Evil

I worked at a video rental store for five years. In that time, I met all of our regular customers. One of our regulars was a man named Paul.

Whenever Paul would come in, I knew it would be bad. He’d spend hours in the store talking. That’s great because I love talking with people, but he talked so much, whoever would be working on the days he’d come in would fall behind in their work. This happened just about every week. The man either loved to talk, or he hated being at home. We never figured out which.

The topics he would always choose to talk to me about were ones that never really struck my fancy. He talked a lot about guns and his time in the FDA, as well as his time as a marine. As a Christian peacemaker and a revolutionist, opposed to government, I tried to stray from putting in my opinion. He was very headstrong and always spoke what was on his mind, and frankly, I didn’t want to create a conflict of interest situation. I mainly just smiled and nodded.

One day, he asked what I was in school for. I told him “Youth Ministries”.

“Oh, so you want to be a minister, huh?”

    “Yes, sir.” I said.

    His reaction was heartbreaking.

“You know… I don’t know what to believe about God. They say He’s all knowing and all loving, but when bad things happen to innocent people, no one can give a good answer as to where God is in that situation.”

I nodded in agreement while listening.

“My eight year old daughter became very sick… and in a matter of weeks, she died. Now tell me, where was God when she was suffering? Was she suffering for a purpose? And what kind of sick God would make such a young girl suffer and die at such a young age? I asked my priest. He couldn’t answer. I asked pastor after pastor and they couldn’t answer. I decided to walk away from Church. I don’t know if there is a good answer, but if there is, I haven’t found it yet. Why such a little girl? What could she have done that caused God to want to take her life? No eight year old girl should go though that. And you know what, no father should have to hold his eight year old girl as she takes her last breath.”

He began to mellow a bit.

“I do believe in God. These men who claim to represent God… they don’t know what it’s like to lose a daughter. And if they can’t explain why God would want my daughter’s life, why should I trust the direction they are sending me?”

Sometimes, the phrase “The Lord works in mysterious ways” just isn’t enough.

The problem of suffering and evil has driven many people away from the church. They want to believe in God. They want to go back to Church. But how can they trust God? Why do these bad things happen?

So what about suffering and evil? Are these things God’s fault? Are they part of God’s plan? Surely, God weeps when eight year old girls get sick and die.

I think in situations like these, we have to remember that God, although all powerful, is not in full control. He doesn’t choose when someone will get sick, when someone will die, when someone will be kidnapped, when someone will get murdered, when someone will get raped, etc. He’s relinquished some of his control. We are subject to our natural world and all of it’s acts of nature. We are also under our own control and are subject to others and their actions. At the same time, we can’t altogether rule out the metaphysical aspect, as well. The principalities and powers that come to tempt us and harm us play a role in some of the suffering and evil that goes on in this world.

Does God let bad things happen? Yes. God gave up full control because giving up full control shows that he really loves us.
Does God cause bad things to happen? No. He gave up full control and gave us free wills. We are also subject to nature. The demonic also plays a part in suffering and evil.

I don’t know if this answer would have been good enough for Paul. Maybe he’ll come to this conclusion in time. I hope he does.

  • How I’d Like to Go

“My father in-law suffered from dementia. But I have to tell you, in his later life, his smile became broader, his countenance brighter– All those around him were suffering, but he himself was filled with joy. For the last few weeks of his life, he lost even the capacity to speak. But one morning, the morning he died, he sat up in bed at 6:45am, raised his arms, and spoke to an unseen presence and yelled at the top of his lungs, ‘O death, where is your sting? O grave, where is your victory? Praise be to God that gives me victory!’ He fell back in bed, and a moment later, he died. That’s the way I want to go. That’s the way everyone would love to go.”
